Wine 2018
LIFE - Claudio Rosso
and Piero Nebiolo are the owners of this small company of Costigliole
d'Asti, Barbera's land, they lead with very clear ideas and upstream:
natural wines, or the result of the least possible intervention in the
cellar, no sulphites
addition, whites and red wines are put on the market when they are judged
ready to be drunk, not a minute before. All done with great simplicity
and absolute rigor.
VINEYARDS - Among the
rows of vines under the farmhouse, rich in herbs and flowers, insects
and perfumes, we talked with Claudio who illustrated the novelties in
the viticultural field, and not only: the biodynamic certification and
the "VinNatur" certification will arrive soon. In addition,
a vineyard was replanted with wild material and grafted on the basis
of a mass selection, in short, a constant search for the solution of
viticultural problems based on the study and observation.
WINES - A new wine:Sec 2016(
1300 bt 7 €), moscato with some cortese, dry, macerated for a short
time on its skins; it's fresh and lively, refreshing. Le Aie Selezione
2013 (chardonnay, 1300 bt. 13 €) ages in acacia wood, is floral
on the nose, dynamic and consistent on the palate. La Roera 2014
(5000 bt € 9) speaks with frankness the language of barbera, between
the sweet fruit, sapidity and beautiful energy. The San Martino
(2000 bt. 13 €) same grape, convinces by the richness and maturity
of the fruit, always supported by an acid vein that makes the sip enjoyable.
The Cardin 2010 (Barbera, Nebbiolo, 5000 bt 15 €) is still
vinous, has a solid structure and a wide range of floral and herbaceous
scents. The Cardin Selection
2011 (Barbera Nebbiolo,
1200 bt. 20 €) with a higher percentage of Nebbiolo, is born in
a 65-year-old vineyard and shows structure and power, juiciness and
fine tannins.

LIFE-
With
names like Red and Nebiolo a future between the rows would seem predestined
from birth, at least in Piedmont. Claudio Rosso and Piero Nebiolo, however,
are anything but classic winemakers: their virtuoso and purist approach,
both in the vineyard and in the winery, contrasts sharply with what
more can be found in the area. Both come from families with a long tradition,
have joined forces and vineyards in 2002, giving birth to Cascina Roera
.
VINEYARDS - The grass-covered vineyards and happily " wild
" of Cascina Roera are a joy to the eye and stand out in a landscape
where agriculture is usually, unfortunately, strong conventional accent.
In the precious area of Bionzo around the winery, where the majority
of the vineyards are, the soil is white, in medium-textured and rather
rich in limestone . The vineyard San Martino, on the other hand, presents
the classic Costigliole land feature, more clay-rich.
WINES
- Indispensable minimal interventions, long aging for important wines and little
sulfur, make meaningful and digestible products. Only steel for the maceration
of whites: fres, graceful and sour the Ciapin 2014 (Arneis Chardonnay;
bt 2500 ; € 8), more depth and substance in Chardonnay Le Aie (2500
bt. 8 €) subtle tannic. Barbera d' Asti Superiore San Martino 2010
(3000 bt; € 13) Has nose earthy, mature, happily evolved and a rigorous palate,
tannic but juicy. The Cardin 2009 (1300 bt ; € 14), with the balance
of barbera nebbiolo, is complex, powerful, and offers warm and sweet sensations.
Monferrato Rosso Vigna Piva 2009 (Nebbiolo; bt 3300 ; € 14) The profile
is ferrous and spicy.

Wine 2014 LIFE
- Bionzo, located between Costigliole d' Asti Castagnole
Lanze, is the setting of the beautiful story of Claudio Rosso and Piero Nebbiolo.
Friends from the time of Costigliole Together (group of young local producers
who already shared the same vision of the wine) , in 2002 they initiate their
partnership that will soon become a reality devoted to the preservation of nature.
The company adheres to VinNatur since 2008 and small productions straightforward,
simple and genuine . VINEYARDS
- Piero , thanks to the advice of Professor Renzo Corino, Institute of Experimental
viticulture Asti, is a technical avant-garde in the vineyard, already ultra-biologic
at the time, with Claudio combines the experience gained in the field . It helps
Ruggero Mazzilli , valid agronomist Spevis . No weed for 10 years, the grass is
high and it's cutted. Few working for the soil, as little as possible and to alternate
rows: land and rows are so in perfect harmony. WINES
- The wines have strong personalities and are also the result of long storage
(in barrel, cement or bottle) in order to have intact products and stable course.
Instead of thinning you the vintage happens in differents moments - on bands 15-20
days - giving more mature grapes for different labels or selections. Easy
and refreshing the Ciapin 2012 (Arneis, cortese, chardonnay; 2,000 bt .
€ .7,00) Long, sapid, fruity nose for Piedmont Chardonnay Aie 2012
(2.000 bt ; € . 8.00) . Excellent La Rovere, 2011 (Barbera, 6000
bt . € . 8.00) firm symbol, with pleasant acidity. The old vines of Barbera
(with a little Nebbiolo) mark the Cardin Selection 2007 (1,100 bt ; €

Wine 2013 LIFE:
Claudio Rosso and Piero Nebiolo competent and rigorous owners of this small company
that stands out in the Asti landscape. Their choices are always very personal.
The farm is located in a small village, Bionzo, known for Barbera, an amphitheater
with vineyards, woods and hazelfields. In the cellar there are steel tanks for
whites and cement for red wines, and then large wooden barrels. This year the
Cardin wine does it is not 'in the DOC, as has happened to other Cascina Roera
wines. VINEYARDS: Grinding the contrast between the vineyards
of Cascina Roera, vegetated spontaneously, full of flowers and life, and those
surrounding depressing brown landscape. Claudio and Piero, who like experimentation,
are working on the VinNatur project with alternatives to copper and sulfur. Absolute
respect for the land and its health, then, and a very careful viticulture. The
quality of wines is guaranteed by a severe reduction in yields.
WINES: Ciapin 2011 (arneis, cortese, chardonnay; 3000 bt;
7 €) has the verve and freshness, but also a beautiful body and energy on
the palate. Piemonte Chardonnay Le Aie 2011 (2000 bt; 8,00 €) has
crisp notes of almond and a good balance on the palate between pulp and freshness.
Piemonte Chardonnay Le Aie Selezione 2010 (1000 bt; 13,00 €) product
with a short maceration on the skins, is intense and citrusy, has power and panache,
and a juicy finish. La Rovere 2010 (barbera; 6000 bt; 8 €) has excellent
typicity, with nice acidity and support of fleshy fruit and earthy finish. La
Barbera d'Asti Superiore San Martino 2007 (6000 bt; 12 €) has a nose
faceted and excellent sweetness and juiciness in the mouth of invigorating flavor
on the finish. Cardin 2007 (barbera, nebiolo; 5000 bt; 14 €) is intense
on the nose, compact and solid in the mouth, with soft tannins and good energy.

no use of herbicides, insecticides and chemical fertilizers, only copper and sulfur,

wines with a personal note able to surprise us. The Barbera, all very good, deserve
applause. We are waiting with interest the new version of Cardin, that starting

2008 Claudio
Rosso e Piero Nebiolo (with two such names...) have decided to have an artisanal
approach toward wine, in the best sense of the term: manual management of the
vineyard, little pumping, neither filtration nor addition of chemical in the wine,
only copper and sulphur on the vineyard (4-5 time a year maximum), very low level
of sulfite in the wine (and there are trails going on to eliminate it completely).
The industry is light years away. It might be for this reason that Cascina Roera
can afford different orientation such as presenting only now a wine extreme like
the Barbera Cardin Selezione of 2003 or to projet in Costigliole a new Barbera-Nebbiolo
blend of wich, we can bet, we will ear about soon.

Rosso and Piero Nebiolo, two small quality oriented producers have united their
strengths to simplify and rationalise their winery and their will carry on to
produce together under the brand "Cascina Roera". With the exception
of the Barbera d'Asti 1999, all other wine are already the fruit of the blend
of their two productions, while starting from the 2002 harvest, the blend start
from the grape already. The wines, already of a high level, promise to become
even better.

Wine 2017 LIFE-
If you like soft
wines, oenological combed, turn well clear of Cascina Roera; Here, are produced
local wines, sincere without filters. Claudio Rosso and Piero Nebiolo are two
vigneron with a capital V, which in 2002 joined forces and the vineyards, sharing
the same idea of wine: respect for the earth, for the ecosystem and for the end
consumer. Translated: vinifications, little interventionist and no additives,
except low doses of sulfur, for healthy and digestible bottles, full of character.
VINEYARDS
- The approach in the vineyard? Simple: no weeding, no chemical fertilizers or
pesticides, only copper and sulfur in very small doses, spontaneous grassing and
natural resistance inducers. Since 2008 Claudio and Piero are convinced and active
members of VinNatur and collaborate with the association for several research
projects on sustainability in the vineyard. The main soil characteristics are
two: white and thin soils in Bionzo, more clayey and tenacious in the vineyards
of San Martino and Piva. WINES
- The Cardin 2008 (R 1300 bt; € 15), barbera produced with few nebbiolo
grapes, is a mature wine, with complex tertiary notes and a fresh palate of beautiful
fruit sweetness. The Cardin Selection 2009 (R 1300 bt; € 18), with
a greater percentage of nebbiolo, shows an evolution, slower and excellent balance,
with a healthy fruit and deep. The Zero13 2015 (R bt 1800; € 12),
barbera harvest in overripe, macerated 100 days in cement, bottled without sulfur,
this red is powerful but easy to drink. Whites also gain in depth with short maceration
(3-4 days); the Ciapin 2015 (W Arneis, Chardonnay, 2500 bt; € 9) is
slender and soft, deliciously floral. The Aie Selection 2012 (W 1300 bt
B; € 14), a Chardonnay aged in wood, give intense notes of honey, flowers
and plaster, followed by a sharp palate and vibrant.

have to say it, not all products that are natural have defined the characteristics
that invite us to choose them when we run through the wine list . For this reason
it is so hard to become partner of VinNatur , because the integrity of the land

The yield per hectare is 50 q. The wine is made in cement tank. The color and
aromas are macerated fruit, tamarind and cloves, with hints of coffee, ink and
enamel. The pure Nebbiolo, vineyard Piva, is a very elegant pout pourri of red
flowers with hints of peach, cherry and black fruit, soil and spiciness of cloves

unity and purpose of Claudio Rosso and Piero Nebiolo gave birth in 2002 to this
small but lively wine reality. The vineyards are located in part around the winery
in the village of Bionzo and partly near the castle of Costigliole. The two partners
have shown to have a real interest in land conservation, and decided to switch
to organic farming. In recent years the production is turning more and more towards
the typical varieties of Asti, in particular the barbera. Claudio Rosso and
Piero Nebiolo keep popping up with a variety of wines of good quality, as evidenced
by the Barbera d'Asti Superiore, San Martino '05, which has hints a bit 'evolved
red fruit and a rich palate and a long finish , and Barbera d'Asti Superiore Cardin
'05, slightly evolved from the same character on the nose, in his notes of spices
and dried flowers, but from the palate fresh and pleasant, full of fruit and good
structure. Also very good the Monferrato Rosso Vigna Piva '05, from Nebbiolo grapes
in purity, with a nose tones of china and balsamic still marked by the wood, and
a fairly fine palate and a long finish of character despite the tannins a bit
'rough. Barbera

rosso 2008 Cascina
Roera is born six years ago from the uion of the two former estates of Carlo Rosso
and Piero Nebiolo, joining the vineyards that lies partly around the winery in
Bionzo hamlet and partly around the castel of Costigliole. Here the wines produced
are linked to the territory even in a somewhat extreme way, instead of running
after concentration and softness. The clear exemple are the Barbera Superiore
Cardin Selezione 2003, ethereal (15% alcohol), deep, with aromas of earth and
chocolate, with warm, tender and very long finish in mouth. Same for the Chardonnay
Le Aie selezione 2004 (reported by mistake last time instead of the 2003), rich,
exotic, tropical and balsamic, tender up to the sweetness, it is more adapted
to be served with meat and cheese then fishes. Clearly easier to access but not
less attractive are the other Barbera: la Roera 2005, from Bionzo vineyards is
fruity, a bit earthy and coarse while the San Martino 2004 is silky and velvety.
To conclude are the pleasant Freisa and Ciapin, a white wine made of Sauvignon,
Arneis and Sémillon.

Gambero
rosso 2005 The
collaboration between Piero Nebiolo and Claudio Rosso is going on to produce excellent
results with Cascina Roera, the union of their former estates. Their philosophy
to present only really convincing wines goes on, therefore also on this sheet
we will have some shortages and, unfortunately, it lacks just the leading products,
the Barbera d'Asti Superiore Cardin, that, in 2000 has not been produced; we have
however retasted the 2001 vintage and found it even better and more balanced.
Between the Barberas presented the Barbera d'Asti Superiore 2001 stands out: aged
in large oak casks for 60% and in barrel for 40%, it shows a nice, intense ruby
red with still some purple glints; on the nose it offers aromas of fruits such
as plum and blackberry, aromas of species such as tobacco or coffee; on the palate,
the beginning is strong but elegant and balanced; the final confirms a great interpretation
of the terroir. The base version of the Barbera d'Asti 2002 is less complex: good
extraction of colour, aromas of blackcurrants and cherries, ready to taste with
a consistent aromatic persistence. Regarding white wines, first comes the Ciapin
white 2003, a blend of 50% Chardonnay, 40 % Arneis and 10% Cortese fermented in
stainless steel tank and kept in contact with lees; the colour is a charged straw
yellow, with floral and fruity scents; good but non-aggressive acidity and closing
based on a pear aftertaste. The Piemonte Chardonnay Le Aie 2003 is excellent,
with a charged colour, mature scents of fruit, warm and round on the palate with
a nice aromatic persistence.

Gambero
rosso 2004 This
young estate created by Piero Nebiolo and Claudio Rosso has proved right from
the beginning able to offer wine of good quality. A fact that is also confirmed
by this sheet even so it can appear shorter compared with the previous ones. In
reality it is the result of a combination of circumstances: on one side the 2002
harvest, that pushed to produce only two types of Barbera and on the other hand,
the laudable will to delay the release of wines already bottled in order to make
them more harmonious. We will relate therefore neither the Barbera d'Asti Superiore
San Martino 2001 nor the Barbera d'Asti 2002, that will be postponed to next issue
of the guide. Fortunately, the best selection of the estate remains: the Barbera
d'Asti Superiore Cardin 2001. Only 6'000 bottles have been produced on vineyard
with Eastern exposure on chalky soil that express very well the terroir: deep
and intense ruby colour, aromas of cherries and red fruits together with liquorice
and wood balsamic, while it is well balanced on the palate with a clean and pleasant
almond like finish. For the reds, the Ciapin white 2002 is a real blend of Chardonnay
and Arneis (70 + 30%): fermented in stainless steel but with a long permanency
on the lees, it expresses scents of daisy and pear. On the palate, it has the
right freshness but also a gut roundness; it is certainly well done, with its
only limit being a final not too long. More complex is the evaluation of the Piemonte
Chardonnay Le Aie 2002: it appears evolved, with a colour almost of cooper and
a nose of mature plum and meldar; in the mouth it is compensated by mineral flavour
almost like a Riesling.
